Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) είναι μια διαπρεπής γιατρός στην πρώτη της διαστημική αποστολή. Μαζί της ταξιδεύει ο βετεράνος αστροναύτης Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), στην τελευταία του αποστολή πριν "συνταξιοδοτηθεί". Όμως κατά τη διάρκεια ενός περιπάτου ρουτίνας, συμβαίνει η καταστροφή.
Το διαστημικό λεωφορείο καταστρέφεται αφήνοντας τους δύο αστροναύτες μόνους στο κενό... Και όσο οι δύο τους καταλαβαίνουν ότι χωρίς επικοινωνία με τη γη η διάσωσή τους μοιάζει απίθανη, ο αρχικός φόβος γίνεται σταδιακά πανικός.
Ο Alfonso Cuaron παρέδωσε την τελευταία του ταινία το 2006 («Children of Men») και η επιστροφή του αναμένονταν με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον. Αλλωστε στο «Gravity» εκτός από τη σκηνοθεσία ο Cuaron έγραψε και το σενάριο, μαζί με το γιό του Jonas. Το σίγουρο είναι πως η παρουσία στο cast των λαμπερών (και βραβευμένων με Oscar) George Clooney και Sandra Bullock (και μάλιστα σε ένα κινηματογραφικό είδος που δεν έχουν ιδιαίτερη θητεία) αποτελεί μεγάλο στοίχημα της ταινίας.
Μια δεξιοτεχνική, καθηλωτική εμπειρία σε χορταστικές τρεις διαστάσεις, το Gravity είναι μια θριαμβευτική επιστροφή του Αλφόνσο Κουαρόν μετά από πολλά χρόνια, και ταυτόχρονα, μια ασυνήθιστη περίπτωση στην κατηγορία των περιπετειών (εμφανώς) υψηλού προϋπολογισμού, κυρίως για έναν λόγο: είναι ένα υπαρξιακό θρίλερ στο διάστημα για ενάμιση ρόλο! Πρωταγωνιστεί η Σάντρα Μπούλοκ από την αρχή ως το τέλος και κάποιες στιγμές, της κρατάει παρέα ο Τζορτζ Κλούνι. Οι υπόλοιποι, χωρίς να έχουν κάποια ιδιαίτερη σημασία στην πλοκή, σκοτώνονται σχεδόν με το καλημέρα, όταν απόβλητα του διαστήματος συγκρούονται με τον σταθμό όπου οι αστροναύτες κάνουν εργασίες ρουτίνας, και έκτοτε η Μπούλοκ, αναλύτρια και όχι ιδιαίτερα περπατημένη στο κενό αέρος, προσπαθεί να γραπωθεί από ότι μπορεί για να επιβιώσει. Πράγμα εξαιρετικά δύσκολο, που ο Κουαρόν δουλεύει σε φουλ σασπένς, καθώς οι δυνατότητες πλοήγησης περιορίζονται, όπως και η μετάβαση της σε γειτονικούς δορυφόρους, βασικά ερημωμένους (ένεκα οι περικοπές, κι εκεί...). Η τεχνική πλευρά της ταινίας προκαλεί δέος.
Ο Κουαρόν κλείνει το μάτι στο 2001 και το ξεχασμένο Marooned, αλλά φτιάχνει ένα δικό του κλειστοφοβικό σύμπαν, με την πρωτοτυπία της κίνησης της κάμερας σε 360 μοίρες, με ανάλογο εφέ παραζάλης και τελειωτικής αγωνίας. Το έντονο vertigo διακόπτεται έντεχνα από τις στιγμές αναζήτησης, εσωτερικής και αναγκαστικής, της Μπούλοκ, ή οποία βρίσκεται συνεχώς στο δίλημμα του να τα παρατήσει, έχοντας χάσει και το παιδί της, ή να αντέξει και να τα επιστρέψει. Η Αμερικανίδα ηθοποιός κάνει κάτι πολύ δύσκολο, να μιλάει κανονικά και να κινείται αργά, για να προσομοιώσει την συμπεριφορά σε έλλειψη βαρύτητας. Και τα καταφέρνει σε μια ταινία, που θα ήταν πραγματικό αριστούργημα, αν δεν επέμενε, για τον προφανή σκοπό της ταύτισης του θεατή, να βάλει την επιστήμονα να αντιδρά, έστω και κάτω από επείγουσες συνθήκες, σαν τη Ρίπλεϊ από το Alien, δηλαδή σαν μια ειδικευμένη αστροναύτης με τη δύναμη της φανταστικής πολεμίστριας.
