Η αυτοκρατορική Ρωσία του τέλους του 19ου αιώνα αναβιώνει ολοζώντανα στη μεγάλη οθόνη με αφορμή μια ιστορία ερωτικής προδοσίας, μία παράνομη σχέση που εικονογραφείται μοναδικά, μέσα από μια διαχρονική μελέτη, στην ανθρώπινη ηθική.
Παντρεμένη με έναν ισχυρό κυβερνητικό παράγοντα, η Άννα Καρένινα ερωτεύεται βαθιά έναν πλούσιο αξιωματικό του στρατού, τον κομψό κόμη Βρόνσκι και προσπαθώντας απεγνωσμένα να βρει την αλήθεια, αλλά και το νόημα στη ζωή της. Η Άννα Kαρένινα, αψηφά τις συμβάσεις της ρωσικής κοινωνίας κι εγκαταλείπει τον σύζυγο και το γιο της για να ζήσει με τον εραστή της. Ο περίγυρος της όμως δε συγχωρεί και δε ξεχνά? Την καταδικάζει και την εξοστρακίζει, ενώ η ίδια παθαίνει συχνά κρίσεις ζήλιας που σταδιακά την αποξενώνουν από τον αγαπημένο της Βρόνσκι, με αποτέλεσμα να οδηγείται σιγά σιγά σε μια τελματώδης κατάσταση.
Ο σκηνοθέτης Τζο Ράιτ, έχει στο πλευρό του ένα αξιόλογο καστ με προεξάρχοντες τη Μούσα του και κλασική ποια φιγούρα εποχής, Κίρα Νάιτλι, μαζί με τον Τζουντ Λο και τον Άαρον Τέιλορ-Τζόνσον, αλλά και μια ομάδα εμπνευσμένων συνεργατών. Την οργάνωση παραγωγής, έχει η τρεις φορές υποψήφια για Όσκαρ Σάρα Γκρίνγουντ, τη χαρακτηριστική Μουσική, υπογράφει ο Ντάριο Μαριανέλι (Εξιλέωση), ενώ τα υπέροχα κοστούμια εποχής, επιμελήθηκε η δύο φορές υποψήφια για Όσκαρ Ζακλίν Ντουράν (Περηφάνια και Προκατάληψη).
Η οπτική του Τζο Ράιτ,είναι άκρως πρωτότυπη, καθώς προτείνει κάτι πολύ ιδιαίτερο και μοναδικό, αφού ολόκληρη η ταινία, είναι στην ουσία μια θεατρική σκηνή, ειδικά κατασκευασμένη για να υπηρετήσει ονειρικά το όραμα του σκηνοθέτη, με όλες τις τοποθεσίες και τα γεγονότα του βιβλίου να αποδίδονται πάνω σε αυτήν, ενώ δεν λείπουν τα πλούσια σκηνικά και τα εντυπωσιακά κοστούμια.
Ο Vladimir Nabokov, έχει χαρακτηρίσει την Άννα Καρένινα του Τολστόι «Mία από τις μεγαλύτερες ερωτικές ιστορίες στην παγκόσμια λογοτεχνία». Ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα μυθιστορήματα του 19ου αιώνα, η Άννα Καρένινα έχει θεωρηθεί η πνευματική αυτοβιογραφία του Τολστόι. Με φόντο την αυτοκρατορική Ρωσία, το βιβλίο είναι ένας εμβριθής και σύνθετος στοχασμός πάνω στον παράφορο έρωτα και την ολέθρια απιστία, αλλά κι ένα συγκλονιστικό πανόραμα της ρωσικής κοινωνίας του 19ου αιώνα.
Η ταινία ?Anna Karenina?, αποτελεί το νέο, θεατρικών επιρροών, κινηματογραφικό δημιούργημα του διακεκριμένου σκηνοθέτη Τζο Ράιτ που καταπιάνεται αυτήν τη φορά με μια από τις ωραιότερες ερωτικές ιστορίες που γράφτηκαν ποτέ, έναν παράφορο, αλλά και παράνομο έρωτα. Της πανέμορφης Άννας, η οποία αψηφά τις κοινωνικές συμβάσεις κι εγκαταλείπει σύζυγο και παιδί για τον κομψό αξιωματικό κόμη Βρόνσκι, που αντιδιαστέλλεται μοναδικά και τραγικά με τη συντροφικότητα του γάμου μέσα στον αντιφατικό και με περίσσευμα υποκρισίας κόσμο της αυτοκρατορικής Ρωσίας. Το τι σημαίνει για τον σκηνοθέτη το μυθιστόρημα του Τολστόι βρίσκεται συμπυκνωμένο στη φράση «Όλοι προσπαθούν να μάθουν πώς να αγαπούν».
Η «μούσα» του σκηνοθέτη και πρωταγωνίστρια της ταινίας Κίρα Νάιτλι επισημαίνει: «Η ιστορία είναι διαχρονική καθώς οι άνθρωποι πάντα επιθυμούν κάτι/κάποιον που δεν μπορούν να έχουν, πάντα αντιμετωπίζουν περιορισμούς και κανόνες και πάντα έχουν δυσκολία να επικοινωνήσουν τα συναισθήματά τους». Ενώ ο σκηνοθέτης Τζο Ράιτ, συμπληρώνει: «Όταν διάβασα το βιβλίο με άγγιξε άμεσα και μου μίλησε. Ελπίζεις να μοιάζεις με κάποιον συγκεκριμένο χαρακτήρα και συνειδητοποιείς πως έχεις υπάρξει σαν κάποιον άλλο χαρακτήρα. Όλοι είναι απολύτως αληθινοί και τρομακτικά οικείοι.»
Με τη σειρά του, ο γνωστός ηθοποιός Τζουντ Λο, δηλώνει σχετικά: «Συμπάσχω με όλους τους χαρακτήρες της ιστορίας. Πρέπει να κατανοήσεις όλες τις πλευρές για αυτό άλλωστε και το μυθιστόρημα του Τολστόι έχει προκαλέσει τόσες συζητήσεις. Κατεμέ ο Καρένιν, αξιοσέβαστο κυβερνητικό στέλεχος, πλήρως αφοσιωμένο στην εργασία του, αναπόφευκτα θα πληγωθεί καθώς, ενώ εκείνος πιστεύει πως προσφέρει τα πάντα στον γάμο του, εντούτοις δεν έχει το απαιτούμενο πάθος και το ρομαντισμό, πράγμα που δεν γίνεται εσκεμμένα καθώς το πιθανότερο είναι πως έτσι βιώνει εκείνος την αγάπη, όπως την διδάχτηκε από τους δικούς του. Και το ενδιαφέρον είναι πως σταδιακά τον βλέπεις να αφυπνίζεται και να προσπαθεί, όπως μπορεί, να διεκδικήσει την οικογένειά του? Στο τέλος αυτού του «ταξιδιού» είναι ένας άλλος άνθρωπος.»
Όπως προείπαμε, τη μουσική (που απέσπασε και υποψηφιότητα Χρυσής Σφαίρας Πρωτότυπης Μουσικής) υπογράφει ο Ντάριο Μαριανέλι (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, The Soloist) και μάλιστα έγραψε τη μουσική πολύ νωρίς προκειμένου ο χορογράφος Σίντι Λάρμπι Τσερκάουι να έχει άπλετο χρόνο για πρόβες, δεδομένου πως ακόμα και οι σκηνές που δεν εμπεριέχουν χορό είναι και αυτές «χορογραφημένες», ενώ εκείνες που αφορούν σε χορό περιλαμβάνουν δύσκολες κινήσεις, καθώς αυτές καλούνται να εκτελεστούν από ηθοποιούς και όχι από επαγγελματίες χορευτές, οι οποίοι και κλήθηκαν να εξερευνήσουν τη γλώσσα του σώματός τους και να συγχρονίσουν τις κινήσεις τους με εκείνες των υπολοίπων γύρω τους.
Αξίζει να σημειώσουμε, ότι για τα γυρίσματα χρησιμοποιήθηκαν αναμορφικοί φακοί που απαιτούν λίγο περισσότερο φως ενώ σε σημεία ο φωτισμός είναι εσκεμμένα πιο παλιός σε στιλ. Όπως και στην ?Εξιλέωση? έτσι κι εδώ χρησιμοποιήθηκαν φίλτρα ώστε να προκύψει μια όμορφη λάμψη που να αναδεικνύει άψογα το δέρμα των χαρακτήρων.
Τέλος, το καστ συμπληρώνουν οι ηθοποιοί Κέλι ΜακΝτόναλντ (Trainspotting, No Country for Old Men, State of Play), Μάθιου ΜακΦέιντιεν (Pride & Prejudice, Frost/Nixon), Ντόμναλ Γκλίσον (True Grit, Never Let Me Go), Ρουθ Ουίλσον (θα τη δούμε προσεχώς στην ταινία The Lone Ranger), Αλίσια Βικάντερ (A Royal Affair), Ολίβια Ουλίαμς (The Ghost Writer, An Education, The Sixth Sense), Έμιλι Ουάτσον (Breaking the Waves, Synecdoche-New York), καθώς κι ένα πλήθος επαγγελματιών χορευτών, αλλά και κομπάρσων, ιδίως Ρώσων που ζουν στην Αγγλία, ώστε να αποδίδεται όσο το δυνατόν πιο ρεαλιστικά η αυτοκρατορική Ρωσία, εκείνης της εποχής.
