Τζέιμς ΜακΤιγκ (?V for Vendetta?) σκηνοθετεί ένα αγωνιώδες θρίλερ γύρω από μια φανταστική μαρτυρία σχετικά με τη ζωή του Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε. Πρωταγωνιστούν οι Τζον Κιούζακ (?2012?), Άλις Ιβ (?Sex and the City 2?), Λιουκ Έβανς (?Clash of the Titans?) και Μπρένταν Γκλίσον (?Αποστολή στην Μπριζ?).Το 1849, ένας κατά συρροήν δολοφόνος σπέρνει τον τρόμο στους δρόμους της Βαλτιμόρης. Σύντομα ο Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε αντιλαμβάνεται πως οι μέθοδοι του δολοφόνου είναι βγαλμένες από τις ιστορίες του.
Καθώς ο αριθμός των θυμάτων αυξάνεται, η αστυνομία ζητά τη βοήθεια του Πόε. Ο θρυλικός συγγραφέας τρόμου αρνείται αρχικά, μέχρι που η αρραβωνιαστικιά του πέφτει στα χέρια του δολοφόνου. Ο Πόε συνεργάζεται με έναν φιλόδοξο νεαρό αστυνόμο, σε μια αμείλικτη καταδίωξη για να αποκαλύψουν το πρόσωπο που κρύβεται πίσω από τους φόνους, πριν να είναι πολύ αργά για την μοναδική του αγάπη.
