Αργών, τελετουργικών ρυθμών Road Movie που εξελίσσεται υπομονετικά σε σκληρό υπαρξιακό δράμα, η περιπλάνηση του Τσεϊλάν ("Τρεις πίθηκοι") στην έρημη, νυχτερινή Τουρκική ενδοχώρα είναι ένα ταξίδι χωρίς επιστροφή στην καρδιά του σκοταδιού της ανθρώπινης συνείδησης.
Πικρό, σαρκαστικό και βαθιά ανθρώπινο, τιμήθηκε με το Μεγάλο Βραβείο της Επιτροπής στο Φεστιβάλ Κανών. Η ζωή σε μια μικρή πόλη στα βάθη της Ανατολίας, στην ενδοχώρα της Τουρκίας, είναι σαν ένα αέναο ταξίδι στη μέση των στεπών: Η διαρκής αίσθηση ότι κάτι καινούριο και διαφορετικό θα συμβεί ξαφνικά, και θα εμφανιστεί ?πίσω από τον κάθε λόφο?, στην οποιαδήποτε γωνιά της πόλης αυτής, και ταυτόχρονα αν και τόσο εσωτερικό και ίδιο με τα υπόλοιπα, θα δώσει ζωντάνια, θα καθυστερήσει ή και θα αλλάξει τους μονότονους ρυθμούς της καθημερινότητας των κατοίκων. Ένας θάνατος, η αγωνία για την εξιχνίαση του εγκλήματος. Μια ομάδα ανδρών βρίσκεται επί ποδός, ώστε να ανακαλύψει το συντομότερο, ένα νεκρό πτώμα στις αχανείς στέπες της Ανατολής. Ο αστυνομικός, ο γιατρός, ο εισαγγελέας, ο δήμαρχος, και ο ύποπτος για το περιστατικό που βρίσκεται σε πολύ δύσκολη θέση.
Η αναζήτηση του τάφου ενός δολοφονημένου άντρα στις αχανείς εκτάσεις της Ανατολίας γίνεται αφορμή για μια κριτική ματιά πάνω στη σύγχρονη τουρκική κοινωνία αλλά και γενικότερα στην ανθρώπινη κατάσταση σε μια δυνατή, εικαστικά έξοχη, ταινία - Μέγα Βραβείο της κριτικής επιτροπής στις Κάνες. Σ? ένα έρημο τοπίο, κάπου βαθιά στην Ανατολία, μια ομάδα ανθρώπων (ένας εισαγγελέας, ένας αστυνόμος, ένας γιατρός και οι βοηθοί τους, μαζί με δύο δεμένους με χειροπέδες ύποπτους για φόνο) ψάχνει το μέρος που ο ένας από τους δύο δολοφόνους θα τους υποδείξει ότι έχουν θάψει το θύμα τους. Ετσι αρχίζει η νέα ταινία του Τούρκου σκηνοθέτη Νούρι Μπίλγκε Τσεϊλάν, δημιουργού μιας σειράς εξαιρετικών ταινιών («Μακριά», «Τρεις πίθηκοι», «Κλίματα αγάπης», «Σύννεφα του Μάη»), που καταπιάνονται με το δράμα απλών ανθρώπων, τοποθετημένων, όμως, πάντα, σ? ένα συγκεκριμένο κοινωνικό περιβάλλον. Ο χώρος τον οποίο ψάχνουν οι άντρες είναι η Ανατολία, μια υποβαθμισμένη περιοχή, καθρέφτης μιας άλλης Τουρκίας, που μια πλευρά της είχαμε δει στις πρώτες ταινίες του συμπατριώτη του, Γιλμάζ Γκιουνέι. Χρονικά, η ιστορία καλύπτει ένα περίπου εικοσιτετράωρο, με το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της να εκτυλίσσεται τη νύχτα. Σ? όλη σχεδόν τη διάρκεια αυτής της νύχτας, η ομάδα των ανθρώπων σταματά από το ένα μέρος στο άλλο, ψάχνοντας για ένα λιβάδι, με μια συγκεκριμένη πηγή και ένα «στρογγυλό» δέντρο. Σκάβουν κάθε τόσο χωρίς αποτέλεσμα, πιστεύοντας πως ο δολοφόνος τούς κοροϊδεύει, παρ? όλο που αυτός επιμένει πως έθαψε το θύμα του νύχτα και ήταν μεθυσμένος. Κάποια στιγμή, κουρασμένοι οι άντρες αποφασίζουν να κάνουν ένα διάλειμμα στο σπίτι του δημάρχου του πιο κοντινού χωριού. Το πτώμα θα το ανακαλύψουν το επόμενο πρωί, δεμένο χειροπόδαρα, σ? έναν λάκκο.
Η αναζήτηση του πτώματος και οι συζητήσεις για διάφορα, φαινομενικά άσχετα, θέματα δίνουν την ευκαιρία στον Τσεϊλάν να μας μιλήσει για τις σχέσεις, τις διαφορές και τις συγκρούσεις των αντρών, αποκαλύπτοντάς μας, σταδιακά, την κοινωνική και πολιτική κατάσταση που επικρατεί στη σύγχρονη τουρκική κοινωνία καθώς και τα παιχνίδια εξουσίας που παίζονται εκεί. Ο αστυνομικός, παρά τις παρεμβάσεις του φαινομενικά αντικειμενικού εισαγγελέα, θα χρησιμοποιήσει τη βία όταν χρειάζεται (ο δολοφόνος θα μαρτυρήσει τελικά πού έθαψε το πτώμα ύστερα από μια «κλειστή» ανάκριση με τον αστυνόμο, που όπως καταλαβαίνουμε έχει ξεπεράσει τα όρια της ανθρωπιάς), ενώ εκείνο που ενδιαφέρει το γιατρό είναι πότε θα τελειώσει αυτή η περιπέτεια για να επιστρέψει στην «πολιτισμένη» Τουρκία. Ο εισαγγελέας θα συντάξει το πόρισμα όχι σύμφωνα με τα δεδομένα αλλά με όσα αυτός επιλέγει και αποφασίζει, ο δήμαρχος μιλά για ανάγκη βοήθειας προς το φτωχικό χωριό του, ενώ η μελλοντική συμμετοχή της Τουρκίας στην Ενωμένη Ευρώπη γίνεται αφορμή για ένα ειρωνικό σχόλιο από τον εισαγγελέα. Ο Τσεϊλάν χρησιμοποιεί ένα παρόμοιο με τις άλλες ταινίες του στιλ, που θυμίζει τόσο το έργο του Ιάπωνα Γιασουτζίρο Οζου όσο και του δικού μας Αγγελόπουλου, για να δημιουργήσει την εξαιρετική ατμόσφαιρα της ταινίας του: με μεγάλες αργές σεκάνς, μακρινά πλάνα που τοποθετούν τους πολύπλοκους, με πολλές αδυναμίες, χαρακτήρες, στους συγκεκριμένους χώρους και σε αφήνουν να τους προσεγγίσεις και να διεισδύσεις στις σκέψεις τους, με σιωπές που λένε πολύ περισσότερα από ένα διάλογο, δραματουργικά οργανωμένους φωτισμούς, εικόνες εικαστικά πανέμορφες, αυθεντικούς, αποκαλυπτικούς, διανθισμένους με χιούμορ, διαλόγους και δυνατές ερμηνείες απ? όλους τους ηθοποιούς του (ορισμένοι μάλιστα από αυτούς ερασιτέχνες). Μια ταινία που μας λέει πολλά για την τουρκική κοινωνία και όχι μόνο, και που δίκαια κέρδισε το Μέγα Βραβείο της κριτικής επιτροπής του Φεστιβάλ των Κανών.
