Βρισκόμαστε στο 1973. Ο Ψυχρός Πόλεμος συνεχίζει να φθείρει τις διεθνείς σχέσεις. Οι Μυστικές Υπηρεσίες της Βρετανίας (Σέρκους), μοχθούν να κρατήσουν τη Βρετανία ασφαλή έναντι των ομόλογων ξένων υπηρεσιών. Ο επικεφαλής του Σέρκους (Τζον Χαρτ), παίρνει προσωπικά την απόφαση να στείλει τον αφοσιωμένο επιτελή Τζιμ Πριντό (Μαρκ Στρονγκ) στην Ουγγαρία.
Η αποστολή του Τζιμ όμως θα βαφτεί με αίμα και ο επικεφαλής θα αναγκαστεί να αποσυρθεί από το Σέρκους, μαζί με το δεξί του χέρι, τον Τζορτζ Σμάιλι (Γκάρι Όλντμαν), έναν επαγγελματία πράκτορα με οξυμένες αισθήσεις.
Θα ακολουθήσει ένα διεθνές παιχνίδι κατασκόπων με δυνατή πλοκή και διαπλοκή όπου το τίμημα σε συναισθηματικό αλλά και σωματικό επίπεδο που θα κληθούν να πληρώσουν οι παίκτες που έχουν αναμειχθεί σε αυτό θα κλιμακωθεί...
